Electric Renault 4 to debut at Paris Motor Show in October

Max McDee, 12 September 2022

Renault is bringing all the classic icons back to the 21st century, first it was the Renault 5 that we know is going into production next year. Now the company is bringing back the iconic Renault 4 - revised and updated of course but still reminiscent of the car that revolutionized the family hatchback.

The original Renault 4 launched in 1961 with a 747 cc engine alongside its smaller, less popular sibling - the Renault 3. The 3 came with a smaller, 603 cc engine and it only stayed in production for a year, from 1962 it was only the Renault 4 that remained on sale. The car is credited with the first ever folding rear seats and maintenance-free coolant system. It was manufactured all over the world and stayed in production for 33 years, until 1994 with over 8 million units sold.

The new Renault 4 will join the Renault 5 in the brand’s revival of iconic designs. The company wants to have 10 electric cars on sale by 2025 with seven wearing the diamond badge and three being the more sporty Alpine models. The revival seems to be well received by the public and company plans to bring back more classic cars.

Much like the already announced Renault 5, Renault 4 will use the CMF-BEV platform. At the same time it’ll provide a decent 249 miles (400 km) of range and 134 ps (132 hp or 99 kW) electric motor powering the front wheels. The CMF-BEV platform is designed specifically for smaller electric cars and offers unified specification.

There was an electric Renault 4 built last year to celebrate 60 years since the launch of the original Renault 4. The upcoming version clearly retains most of the iconic design items of the original while sitting much higher and having crossover features - larger wheels, higher suspension, taller body. This prototype was followed by trademark registration images that unveiled the design in full.

Renault is aiming at producing really affordable electric cars for the masses, it promised the Renault 5 will be available for around €20,000 and the Renault 4 be cheaper still.

Paris Motor Show kicks off on October 17 and that’s where we’ll see the Renault 4 officially for the first time. It will be joined by a different version of the already unveiled Renault 5 - the company referred to it as “sporty and offbeat show car”, maybe a high performance model?

Those two will be joined on the stage by Kangoo E-Tech electric and the company is bringing the Megane E-Tech to the show as well. There will be a new version of Twizzy on display, this time in a more traditional 2-up seating arrangement, which is actually no longer built by Renault but by Mobilize - a subsidiary of Renault Group.
