BYD may be working on a premium electric supercar

The Chinese rumor mill has convinced itself that BYD is working on launching a premium all-electric supercar. The proof so far are the images you can see below, which purportedly depict a camouflaged prototype of the upcoming model.

This would be a model within BYD's premium brand, which is set to make its official debut later this year. The car is reportedly going to be priced at around CNY 2 million, which at the current exchange rates translates into approximately $285,938 or €286,044. That's definitely premium alright.

Unfortunately, there's no other info about this mythical beast as of yet, so do take all of the above with a healthy dose of skepticism. For BYD to jump straight into Ferrari pricing territory with such a model wouldn't be impossible of course, but it's not extremely probable either.

On the other hand, the upcoming premium brand under the BYD umbrella has been confirmed multiple times by company execs. The logo for this brand is going to be revealed by the end of this month, while the first car, a hardcore off-roader, will be presented between October and December and, according to a local media report from August, would cost more than CNY 1 million ($142,969 or €143,034). In fact, the price range this brand will operate in was expected to be CNY 800,000 ($114,375 or €114,409) to CNY 1.5 million ($214,454 or €214,517), which is not far from the 2 million estimate for the supercar.

BYD is currently targeting the affordable end of the EV market in China with its own brand, and has become the biggest player over there in that space. It sold 978,795 units from January to August this year, up 377% from the same period last year.
