Electric GranTurismo Folgore is the most powerful Maserati ever

Max McDee, 03 October 2022

After many teasers, video reveals and presentations, Maserati finally officially launched its most anticipated model in a very long time. It isn’t Maserati’s first EV, that title goes to Grecale, but GranTurismo is the most powerful production Maserati ever made.

The GranTurismo Folgore comes with three 300kW electric motors - two at the back and one at the front - and a 92.5kWh battery. In theory, the car could have 900kW power output, but it’s not that simple when it comes to electric drivetrains. The power is limited by the battery discharge capacity - it can continuously use 560kW (760hp) of it, which is enough for GranTurismo to claim the title of the most powerful Maserati.

Maserati spent a lot of time designing the new battery pack for GranTurismo, it has the so called “T-bone” shape and rather than being placed under the floor - it fits in the tunnel between the seats. By doing so, the height of the car remained low at only 1,353 mm and yet the center of gravity is kept low and right in the middle of the car for a perfect 50-50 weight distribution.

GranTurismo Folgore joins the club of the fastest Maseratis ever made with a top speed of 198 mph or 320 km/h. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint dealt with in just 2.7 seconds. The car comes with staggered wheels setup - 20-inch rims up front and 21 inch at the back. Folgore can be recognized from afar by its copper colored emblems and unique aerodynamic wheels. Those wheels apparently improve the car’s Cd by 7% when compared to the gas-powered versions.

The car will launch in six colors initially, with the brake calipers available in seven colors. For customers craving more customizations, Maserati offers its Fuoriserie program that caters for most individual requests.

There are also two gas-powered versions of GranTurismo using the Nettuno V6 engine. In the Modena trim, the engine makes 489hp and in the Trofeo it is tuned to 550hp making the Folgore the most entertaining version of all three by far.

An interesting solution is a one-piece hood (bonnet) that wraps all the way to the sides of the car and forms wheel arches. It simplifies the construction and reduces the number of elements, but it means more costly repairs in case of mishaps.

For the first time, Maserati’s iconic clock is digital. It retains the classic design, but shows a lot more than just the time. Multimedia system is powered by Maserati Intelligent Assistant that combines all the displays and HUD to provide a comfortable environment for the occupants. The in-car audio system comes with 19 speakers with 3D sound and with 1,195W of power courtesy of Sonus Faber.

The first units of GranTurismo to go on sale will be the limited edition PrimaSerie 75th Anniversary Launch Edition with Nettuno engines and will be available next year.

The Folgore will launch next, but Maserati did not provide a timeline yet, there is no information yet about pricing either. The company did confirm that the GranCabrio will be available in the electric Folgore trim, though.

Electric Maserati, with 760hp and a decent 92kWh battery for at least 350km of fun - yes, there are longer going electric cars out there. But Maserati is the first from legacy supercar makers to commit to electric drivetrain and make the electric version of the car the fastest in the lineup.

An Italian electric GT with respectable performance and timeless design. The price tag will match its exclusivity, that we can be sure of. Perfect car garage now comes with two electric Maseratis - Grecale and GranTurismo.
