BMW to integrate Huawei's HiCar and HarmonyOS in its Chinese EVs

BMW decided that the best way to smarten up its cars in China is to partner with local tech giant Huawei. The two companies will work on the integration of Huawei's HiCar system and HarmonyOS 5.0 into electric BMWs. BMW is following a similar decision by Audi in a sign of the growing influence of Chinese technology.

The partnership focuses on developing a smart application ecosystem based on Huawei's native HarmonyOS. BMW plans to integrate its digital services, such as the BMW digital key and the My BMW app, with Huawei's HiCar system. The goal is to create a seamless connection between BMW vehicles and Huawei devices, offering a more intuitive and smarter in-car experience.

Specifically, BMW wants to develop a HarmonyOS NEXT-based smart app ecosystem for its next-generation electric cars. Apps like the My BMW app and the MINI app are already compatible with the native HarmonyOS ecosystem. According to BMW, nearly a quarter of My BMW app users in China own Huawei devices. By integrating Huawei's technology, BMW hopes to improve the smart connectivity and in-vehicle app experience for HarmonyOS users.

The first BMW electric cars featuring Huawei's HiCar system are expected to hit the Chinese market in 2026. This should give both companies enough time to integrate their technologies thoroughly and develop reliable systems.

The alliance between the two giants is a response to the fast-evolving landscape of the automotive industry, where technology companies are playing an increasingly important role. By leveraging Huawei's expertise in smart technology and software development, BMW aims to enhance the appeal of its electric cars in the Chinese market.
