Hyundai launches electric Creta SUV in India
Hyundai Creta SUV has enjoyed decent popularity in India for quite some time, and now it has gone electric. With a starting price of just over $20,000, the Creta EV promises to make electric mobility accessible to a wider audience.
This compact SUV has been a remarkable success story in India since its launch in 2015. In 2024, Creta achieved record sales, with 186,919 units sold, accounting for over 30% of Hyundai's overall sales of 605,433 vehicles in India. It's no surprise, with so many units sold, that Creta is one of the most popular SUVs in the country.
Building on this momentum, Hyundai introduced an electric version of the Creta at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. The Creta EV has a starting price of Rs 17.99 Lakh, equivalent to just over $20,000, making it quite an attractive proposition in India's fast-growing EV market.
The electric Creta is available in four trims – Executive, Smart, Premium, and Excellence. The top-of-the-line Excellence trim is priced at Rs 23.50 lakh, approximately $27,200. Although it sounds affordable by Western standards, the gas-powered Creta starts at around $12,800 (Rs 10.99 Lakh) - nearly half the price of the EV version.
There's only one option of electric motor - a 126 kW (170 hp) unit powering front wheels. It's powerful enough to help Creta deal with the 0 to 62 mph sprint in 7.9 seconds. No, it won't break any speed records, but this is fast enough for a family SUV.
Hyundai offers the Creta EV with two battery pack options: a 42 kWh and a 51.4 kWh. These provide a driving range of 242 miles and 294 miles respectively, based on Indian driving conditions.
Hyundai has ambitious plans for the Indian EV market, with a goal of launching five new electric vehicles by 2030, including the new Creta EV. The company is even exploring the potential of three-wheel electric vehicles in response to the unique mobility needs of the region.
