Volvo invests in Breathe's software to speed up EV charging

Volvo is partnering with UK startup Breathe Battery Technologies to bring faster and smarter charging to all of its upcoming electric cars. Volvo's Tech Fund corporate venture capital arm is investing in Breathe an undisclosed amount, which would see the startup's charging tech make it to Volvo EVs.

Breathe's algorithm-enabled charging software promises to optimize and improve the charging performance and increase the charging speed by up to 30% while maintaining the same energy density and range. Breathe claims the charging improvements will last across the full battery life cycle and won't impact its health.

The solution brings faster charging without the need to change battery design or mine extra materials - essentially at a zero impact to the environment - win-win.

Volvo says the charging software is compatible with the hardware used in new-generation Volvo EVs, meaning it will be easy to scale. However, older models will seemingly not get the advancement.
