Chevrolet FNR-XE - Ultium-based electric sedan for China unveiled
GM just pulled a rabbit out of the hat - the Ultium-based all-electric sedan Chevrolet FNr-XE Concept. The vehicle was unveiled during the GM China Day 2022 in Shanghai where the company confirmed it is planning to launch 15 all-electric car models in China by 2025.
Couple of “firsts” happened during that presentation - this is Chevrolet’s first all-electric sedan and it will be the first Ultium-based EV designed purely for the Chinese market. It will be interesting to see how the GM plans to incorporate the local supply chain into the Ultium production and development.
The car itself is quite a departure from the current Chevrolet’s design language although the company claims its low front end is a homage to the muscle cars of the past. There is no argument - the car looks sporty and attractive with its low stance and wide wheel arches and the cabin is nicely hunched over the rear axle.
Overall the design is attractive and futuristic without being too aggressive which is exactly what sedan buyers are looking for. There are no specifications available, but the car is closely related to Chevrolet Equinox EV and will sit in a compact sedan segment competing directly with Tesla Model 3.
GM is expanding its portfolio and operations in China, the company already is delivering Cadillac Lyriq to local customers and it showcased the Cadillac Celestic and GMC Hummer EV at the China International Import Expo at the beginning of November. Buick is a very active brand on the Chinese market and it will unveil its first all-electric and Ultium based model before the end of this year.
