Hyundai to unveil Ioniq 6 tomorrow - June 29
UPDATED
Hyundai will reveal the design of Ioniq 6 tomorrow - June 29 and it has confirmed the long awaited 4-door EV will be officially launched on July 14 at the Busan Motor Show in South Korea. It has been 4 years since the last Busan Motor Show, it only happens every two years and the last event in 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19.
There is a lot of buzz surrounding the Ioniq 6, which is shaping up as a key vehicle for the company. The car is based on the famous Hyundai Prophecy prototype which made huge waves when first shown in March 2020. The 4-door swanky sedan has been delayed due to some design changes but now it is ready for launch and Hyundai is keeping up the hype.
For the last few days the company’s marketing department has been dropping hints and teasers of the upcoming car. First a photo turned up last Thursday under the title “Part 1 - New Era”. It shows the rear of the car with a transparent trunk lid covering a few rows of LEDs. Driving behind Ioniq 6 will be one heck of a visual experience.
The second image shown on Friday was titled “Part 2 - Emotional Efficiency”. The image clearly shows the rear quarter of the upcoming car and it confirms the curvy body line dropping down towards the rear of the car and keeping it close to the rear wheel arch. Quite similar to the Prophecy prototype. Of course we won’t see the frameless windows but the overall shape seems to have remained fairly intact.
The third image called “part 3 - Optimistic Futurism” shows the reason why Ioniq 6 was delayed by three months. The chairman of the company didn’t like the front of the car and sent it back to the design department. The result - ot at least a tiny part of it - is what we see in this image. Clear, futuristic smooth lines, side vents to direct airflow to brakes and low front lip under the spoiler point to a sporty looking car.
The fourth image was published today under the title “Part 4 - Symbol Of Connection”. This is the part of the car that most perfectly matches the prototype. The new “pixel” rear lights, just like on the Ioniq 5, will be able to display active patterns. They are mounted really low - just like in the Prophecy - and are vertical and unapologetically large. Combine those low placed tail lights with the full width LED spoiler sitting on the top of the trunk and you have a fully blown spaceship.
Hyundai is keeping the public on their toes with yet another image released today (June 27) - this one is called “Innate Purity” and it shows the front quarter of the car. What we do get to see is the rear view mirror replaced with the camera. The wheel arch is quite pronounced and strangely for a production car, the wheels are not recessed into it but are in line with the lip. It is a small detail but it makes a huge visual difference to any car.
Another day another teaser from Hyundai. This time we get a glimpse of the front with Pixel headlights, we get to see the front bumper and low slung bonnet surrounded by the bulging wheel arches - very muscular and dynamic design. There appear to be either sensors or more pixel LEDs in the bumper or it could be just a design accent. This is the last teaser from Hyundai - the Ioniq 6 will be unveiled in its full glory tomorrow.
This is really shaping up to be a very interesting car. The hope is Hyundai didn’t water down too much the rest of it and the bits that we are yet to see will be just as exciting. We’ll have the answer soon enough.
