Mercedes-Benz confirms electric-only “baby” G-Class
In a groundbreaking announcement at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show, Mercedes-Benz's technical chief, Markus Schaefer, confirmed the company's move towards an all-electric future by revealing that the upcoming “baby” G-Class will be powered exclusively by an electric powertrain, putting an end to speculations about the possibility of an ICE alternative.
What sets this electric SUV apart is not only its power source but also its unconventional choice of platform. Contrary to expectations, the smaller Mercedes G-Class won't be built upon the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), designed for the brand's entry-level electric cars. Instead, it will have its own platform with components from Mercedes' larger vehicles.
One of the most exciting prospects for this mini off-roader is the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies akin to those featured in the upcoming full-size electric G-Wagon, a project spearheaded by Magna Steyr. Mercedes has boldly claimed that the electric EQG, a sibling of the "baby" G-Class, will outshine its ICE counterpart in terms of off-road capabilities. This assertion hints at the potential for serious off-roading prowess in the smaller G-Class as well.
The creation of the smaller electric G-Wagon is entrusted to Mercedes' new specialist G division, marking it as the third model in the G series, joining the ranks alongside the combustion-powered G-Class and the EQG. The arrival of the smaller electric G-Class is scheduled for sometime in 2026, while the full-size EQG is set to make its debut later this year.
An all-electric "baby" G-Class built on an unconventional platform is a monumental shift for Mercedes-Benz. It clearly shows the growing influence of EVs in the market and paves the way for a future where even iconic and rugged SUVs like the G-Class will no longer rely on traditional internal combustion engines.
