Peugeot 408 debuts: smart-looking fastback with EV model on the way

Ivan, 22 June 2022

Peugeot just announced the 408 fastback, which will hit showrooms in 2023. The 408 will be manufactured in Peugeot's Mulhouse plant in France, but a China-bound model will be assembled in Chengdu later on.

The Peugeot 408 initially comes in two PHEV powertrains with 133kW (180hp) and 165kW (225hp) of power and 360nm (265 lb-ft) of torque, both using the e-EAT8 8-speed automatic transmission. There's a pure combustion option as well. More importantly, Peugeot says a fully-electric model is coming too.

The Peugeot 408 is based on Stellantis' EMP2 platform, which it shares with the 308 and 308 SW. It also looks quite a bit like the new Citroen C5 X.

The 408 is 4,687mm long, 1,859mm wide, and 1,478mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,787mm. It has an impressive 536l of boot space, which balloons up to 1,611l with the seats folded.

The car is in line with Peugeot's style with the 'fanged' LED lights on the front, taut taillights, and sweeping curves.

Inside the Peugeot 408 is very avant-garde. It gets dual 10-inch touchscreens in the Allure trim, while the GT trim comes with 360-degree parking assistance through the front, rear, and side cameras. There's a 10-speaker Focal Hi-Fi sound system, as well as an Air Quality System, which constantly monitors the cabin for the quality of air.

Peugeot hasn't shared any details about the EV drivetrain, aside from the fact that it's coming sometime in 2023.
