Tesla Cybertruck resale hype cools as prices crash

The Tesla Cybertruck, known for its futuristic design and eye-watering resale prices, is hitting a speed bump in the aftermarket arena. Initially, these trucks were going for more than double their retail value, creating a frenzy among those hoping to turn a quick and substantial profit. But now, the well of buyers willing to pay absurd premiums seems to have dried up.

John Clay Wolfe, head of GIVE ME THE VIN (US largest car wholesaler), was behind the first-ever Cybertruck auction sale in February. It went for a jaw-dropping $244,500. Since then, however, the market has cooled considerably. Just a few weeks back, Wolfe's company sold two units for under $200,000. This past week saw sales drop further – one Cybertruck went for $175,000, and another for only $171,000.

This resale crash is perhaps a surprise, considering the initial buzz and Tesla's own crackdown on 'flippers'. The automaker, known for its direct sales model, attempted to curb resales of early production Cybertrucks with threats of lawsuits and "no-resale" clauses. It even canceled existing preorders on buyers caught trying to sell reservations for a premium.

Yet it is seemingly the market itself that will succeed where Tesla failed. Resellers who'd planned on flipping the highly anticipated electric truck may find the dreams of massive profits replaced with sobering losses.

The promise of mass production (around 250,000 units annually) reduces the incentive for buyers to pay inflated prices when trucks will soon be readily available. The Cybertruck's early reviews and real life tests may have also contributed to hype fatigue, limiting its long-term appeal outside its niche fanbase.

Of course, there are still plenty of people eagerly awaiting their Cybertruck orders. But if you're dreaming of picking one up with the sole intent of making a quick buck on the resale, it might be time to adjust those expectations.

Don't believe all the marketing bs. This thing is even uglier in person.
