Tesla's European Supercharger network goes free for a day to celebrate 10th anniversary
Tesla is throwing one heck of a birthday party, and you're invited - even if you don't own a Tesla. Today marks the 10th anniversary of Tesla's first Supercharger stations in Europe, and the company is celebrating by enabling free charging for all electric vehicles in Europe.
Ten years ago, Tesla opened its first six Supercharger stations in Norway. Fast forward to today, and the network has expanded to cover 36 countries with over 1,000 sites, and more than 13,000 Supercharger units.
To commemorate this milestone, Tesla is offering free charging at its Supercharger stations across Europe. And it's not just for Tesla owners. If you have any brand of electric vehicle, you can plug in and power up at 70% of Tesla's Supercharger stations in Europe. That's right, Tesla is sharing the love, or should we say, the electricity, with everyone.
The offer is valid for today only and applies to a long list of European countries, from Austria to the United Kingdom. To get your free electrons, you'll need to start your charging session between 9:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. CEST. So, if you're reading this and you're in Europe, you might want to get a move on.
Now, let's talk about the fine print - because as always, there’s a catch. Not all Supercharger stations are participating in this electric fiesta. Only those that are open to all EVs are part of the deal, which makes up about 70% of the network. So, if you're driving a non-Tesla EV, make sure you're at the right station before you plug in, or you might end up with a bill instead of a birthday treat.
The reaction to this one-day promotion has been mostly positive, but not everyone is thrilled. Some users pointed out that their countries were conspicuously absent from the list. For instance, Tesla Owners Türkiye questioned why Turkey, which is partly in Europe, didn't make the cut, especially when Israel, located entirely in Asia, did. Fair point, but hey, no party is perfect.
Tesla's 10th-anniversary celebration is a clever way to not only commemorate a decade of growth but also to introduce more people to the Supercharger network. It's like saying, "Hey, come try our stuff. It's on the house today." And who can resist a freebie?
