The new electric Range Rover is an EV that refuses to act like one
When Charles Spencer King sketched out the very first Range Rover in the late 1960s, he thought of a utilitarian aristocrat - a 4x4 trimmed in hose-down vinyl that could shepherd flock of sheep across a soggy Yorkshire moor before parking outside the Savoy without a hint of shame. Five decades later, the vehicle's defining paradox is still intact, only now it has a high-voltage pulse.
Electric propulsion, far from diluting the flagship's haughty character, happens to be the most natural mechanical fit Solihull has ever stumbled upon. Silence, instant torque, and a total absence of mechanical strain are qualities the country-set elite have chased for generations; they just used to burn ungodly quantities of high-octane petrol to approximate them.
It takes a breathtaking amount of nerve to charge £154,070 for a base-spec EV and deliberately make it look indistinguishable from the combustion model sitting beside it in the showroom. If you fancy letting the bespoke SV division run wild with custom leathers and deep-pile mohair, you can easily nudge the invoice past £225,240 - or into the murky territory of "price on application" if your tastes lean toward the stratospheric.
Yet there are no neon light bars, no bizarre aerodynamic jellybean profiles, and certainly no spaceshippy design departures to announce your carbon-neutral virtue to the neighbors. JLR was so brazen about this carryover aesthetic that they did not even bother applying psychedelic camouflage to their development prototypes. Aside from a subtly reprofiled grille, aerodynamically slicker wheel designs, and bespoke underbody paneling that shaves a modest 0.01 off the drag coefficient, this is the exact same stately, monolithic silhouette that lords over the fast lane of any highway.
But under all that vast aluminum skin, the engineering team had to perform a high-wire balancing act. Rather than cooking up a bespoke, skateboard-only platform that would have forced a radical redesign, JLR engineered its mixed-metal MLA-Flex architecture from day one to swallow petrol, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric guts down the same assembly line.
The consequence of housing a mammoth double-stacked battery pack with 118.5 kWh of usable capacity is immediately apparent on the weighbridge: the Range Rover Electric tips the scales at 6,360 lb. That makes it 165 lb chunkier than the plug-in hybrid variant and pushes it dangerously close to the gross vehicle weight rating of a medium-duty commercial van.
Mercedes-Benz took a similar brick-with-batteries approach with the electric G 580 with EQ Technology. The battery-powered G-Wagen hauls an astronomical 6,801 lb across a relatively stubby overall length of 182 inches, costing a terrifying £180,860 out of the box. By comparison, the standard-wheelbase Range Rover Electric spans 198.9 inches from stem to stern - giving you over 15.7 inches more metal and cabin sprawl while actually undercutting the German box by two adult passengers' worth of mass.
Dedicated luxury road-runners like the BMW iX M70 (measuring 195.5 inches and weighing 5,853 lb) and the Lotus Eletre (stretching 200.9 inches and clocking in at around 5,820 lb) might be a bit lighter, but they look like aerodynamic running shoes parked outside a Georgian manor house. Solihull simply refused to compromise on the sovereign stance.
Propulsion duties fall to a pair of permanent-magnet synchronous motors - one per axle - developed entirely in-house after off-the-shelf induction motors repeatedly overheated during brutal off-road endurance trials. Built at JLR's overhauled Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton - a facility that saw a £350 million cash injection to switch from burning fossil fuels to winding copper coils - these motors deliver a combined 542 bhp (or 550 PS) and 627 lb-ft of twisting force.
That is enough muscle to slingshot this three-ton living room from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. It is not the sickening, eyeball-flattening acceleration of a tri-motor hyper-SUV, but it is effortless, deep-chested pace delivered with the nonchalance of a private jet taxiing onto a private runway.
Interestingly, JLR avoided the four-motor arrangement deployed by the electric G-Class. Quad motors make for dazzling tank turns on manicured lawns, but they add mechanical weight and introduce a real-world trail deficit: a single wheel can only ever receive whatever maximum power its dedicated motor can muster.
In the electric Range Rover, the motors drive through open differentials front and rear, relying on high-speed braking intervention via an Integrated Traction Management system that reads and manages wheel slip in as little as 50 milliseconds. The moment a tire begins to scrub uselessly on wet grass or slick shale, the calipers clamp down, shifting the axle's full 260 kW output across to the wheel with actual grip. It might sound like a compromise on paper, but out in the mud - it works.
In a traditional supercharged V8, crawling over terrain needs superhuman coordination: waiting for engine revs to rise, giving the torque converter time to take up drivetrain slack, and moderating mechanical windup across multiple transfer cases. Here, you simply squeeze the throttle. With single-pedal drive engaged, the motors meter out millimeter-precise torque, crawling up gradients as steep as 45 degrees without a single complaint from the chassis.
Then comes the party piece that every Range Rover custodian demands, even if their wildest aquatic venture is a puddle outside an upmarket coffee shop. The official spec sheet lists a 35.4 inches wading depth, matching the combustion flagship, but Solihull's engineers built in a failsafe for when optimism blinds common sense.
A completely sealed battery pack creates a massive air cavity beneath the passenger compartment, and the vehicle will actually start to float if the water gets deep enough, causing the tires to lift from the riverbed and lose all traction. To combat this accidental boating episode, chassis sensors monitor load changes on the suspension; the moment the car senses it is turning into an amphibious craft, the two-chamber air springs automatically pump an additional 2.36 inches of height into the struts.
Back on the smooth tarmac, the low-slung placement of the battery pays handsome dynamic dividends. The electric Range Rover drops its center of gravity by 3.46 inches compared to the petrol V8, while sitting 0.59 inches lower in standard ride mode with ground clearance tucked in by 1.14 inches. To keep all that inertia from turning roundabout exits into nautical rolling maneuvers, JLR bolted on the sophisticated twin-valve dampers developed for the raucous Range Rover Sport SV.
Thanks to the standard 7.3 degrees of active rear-wheel steering, the car shrinks around the driver at urban speeds, masking its massive footprint while isolating occupants with astonishing success. Under full acceleration, it measures 7 dBA quieter inside the cabin than its eight-cylinder sibling - a difference so pronounced that wind flutter around the wing mirrors becomes the loudest nuisance in your field of hearing.
Naturally, hauling nearly three tons of luxury through the air means physics eventually demands its pound of flesh. On the official European WLTP test cycle, the Range Rover Electric promises up to 372 miles from a full charge, though JLR refreshingly concedes that realistic everyday driving will settle around 330 miles. When the juice eventually runs low, the 800V electrical backbone supports peak DC fast charging speeds up to 350 kW, replenishing the cells from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
The only compromise is in the towing department - the old-school diesel and V8 models proudly yank 7,716 lb, and the plug-in hybrid manages 6,610 lb, but the Electric is capped at 5,512 lb. JLR's anonymized fleet telematics suggest this still covers 97% of owners' genuine trailering routines, but for the equestrian enthusiast pulling a double-horse trailer, that 2,200 lb drop will sting.
Inside, the cabin is the oasis of reassuring normalcy. JLR learned the painful lessons of the Jaguar I-Pace - a brilliant, ahead-of-its-time EV that launched in 2018 only to be stranded on an orphaned platform with software bugs creeping in. The Range Rover Electric makes no such missteps.
The high center console comes complete with the tactile physical gear selector and drive-mode dials sitting atop the electrical hardware hidden below. There are no gimmicky edge-to-edge touchscreens forcing you into endless submenus just to adjust an air vent, and the seating position is delightfully upright, offering that signature panoramic command of the road.
Thank heavens - JLR refused to transform their crown jewel into a sci-fi party trick, and built something far more compelling: a serene, incredibly capable luxury liner that treats electric propulsion as the ultimate refinement upgrade. Yes, it is outrageously expensive, monstrously heavy, and probably the best definition of the word "decadent." But for those who demand the finest drawing room on wheels, the silent King of Solihull is the answer.
