Volkswagen dives into the hot hatch fray with the ID.3 GTX

Volkswagen is finally throwing its hat into the hot hatch ring with the release of the ID.3 GTX – a performance-oriented spin on the brand’s popular compact hatchback. Building on the success of the standard ID.3, the new ID.3 GTX model promises a more dynamic driving experience with an amped-up powertrain and some design tweaks.

At the heart of the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX is the rear-mounted permanent synchronous electric motor. That variant generates 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. Opt for the GTX Performance model, and you'll get the more potent 322 horsepower – making its powertrain the most powerful single electric motor in Volkswagen's lineup.

The impressive torque output means instant acceleration off the line. The base GTX can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just six seconds, while the Performance model reaches the same speed in 5.6 seconds. Both models have electronically limited speeds at 112 mph and 124 mph, respectively.

With a 79 kWh battery pack that supports up to 175 kW DC fast charging, the ID.3 GTX can go 373 miles on a charge per the WLTP cycle. And then you can juice the battery from 10% to 80% in roughly 26 minutes.

Distinguishing itself from the standard ID.3, the ID.3 GTX sports a more aggressive design to telegraph its performance intent. The front fascia features a reworked bumper with larger air intakes and new LEDs adding a distinctive touch. The rear diffuser, as well as the window frames, mirror caps, and side sills, receive a sleek gloss-black finish. To add to its sporty character, the GTX models ride on a choice of eye-catching 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the GTX boasts contoured front seats, red accents throughout, and GTX branding for emphasis. Volkswagen has also upgraded the standard 10-inch infotainment screen to a new 12.9-inch display across all ID.3 models.

The ID.3 GTX comes not a moment too soon - VW needs to boost its EV sales and this electric GTi may just be the ticket.

While the US market will unfortunately miss out, the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX brings a fresh contender to the growing segment of electric hot hatches in Europe. Using the upgraded powertrain from the new ID.7 is a simple recipe for success - providing VW exercises some restraint when it comes to pricing.

Who can trust them after the unreliable junk that the ID3 was. People forget way too quickly.
