Volkswagen unveils the ID. Polo, reveals performance, range, and pricing

Today Volkswagen has fully taken the wraps off the ID. Polo. The car will be available to pre-order from "the end of April" so either today or tomorrow. The car starts at £21,316 in Germany in the entry-level Trend trim. VW bills this as "excellent value for money" in its press release. You will of course be the judge of that.

The car comes with four drivetrains and two batteries. The 85kW (116PS) and 99kW (135PS) drivetrains use a 37kWh net capacity LFP battery with support for 90kW DC fast charging. The 155kW (211PS) drivetrain uses a 52kWh net NMC battery with support for 105kW DC fast charging. This will also be on the ID. Polo GTI, which will develop 166kW (226PS). That one is coming next year.

VW forecasts a range of up to 204 miles from the smaller battery and up to 282 miles from the bigger one, using the WLTP cycle. Top speed is 99 mph on all versions. The ID. Polo is built using "the current evolutionary stage of the modular electric drive platform" MEB+ and has front-wheel drive. Thanks to this platform, the ID. Polo can deliver 15.6 ft³ of trunk / boot space, even though it's just 159.6 inches long, 71.5 inches wide, and 60.2 inches tall. It has a wheelbase of 102.4 inches.

Inside there's a 10-inch "Digital Cockpit" in front of the driver and a 13-inch infotainment screen even in the base Trend version. The Life trim is one level up and brings adaptive cruise control, a rear view camera system, Park Distance Control and Front Cross Traffic Assist, as well as an anti-dazzle interior mirror and electrically folding exterior mirrors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard from this level up, along with a wireless charger for smartphones.

The top trim is called Style and comes with LED matrix headlights, 3D light tail clusters, illuminated VW logos at the front and rear, sport comfort seats (whatever that means), "high-quality materials" inside, steering wheel and seat heating, and two-zone climate control.

Optionally, you can get a 425W Harman/Kardon audio system with ten speakers and a subwoofer, a large panoramic glass roof, and a pneumatic massage function for the electrically adjustable 12-way front seats. Vehicle-to-load will be offered as standard on all trims and supports up to 3.6kW.
