540hp Renault 5 Turbo 3E unveiled, 1,980 units to be sold in 2027

Renault wants to shake up the electric cars market with the 2027 arrival of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The company calls it a "mini-supercar," and with 540 horsepower going to the rear wheels, this electric beast will certainly set a new performance benchmark in the compact car segment. Limited to only 1,980 units, this modern take on the iconic 1980s Renault 5 Turbo will be available for orders soon.

The 5 Turbo 3E says it adopts a design-first approach. The EV's design draws inspiration from its classic predecessor while using modern aerodynamic enhancements.
Under its striking exterior hides a bespoke platform developed by Alpine, Renault's sports division. The new 5 Turbo has two in-wheel motors, delivering a claimed 3,540 lb-ft of wheel torque. This setup allows for precise wheel control and eliminates the need for a traditional differential. The result is a projected 0-62 mph time of under 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph.
Powering the 5 Turbo 3E is a 70 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of 249 miles. Renault acknowledges that aggressive track driving will reduce this to approximately 15-20 minutes. The battery's improved thermal management allows for 350 kW fast charging, enabling a 15-80% charge in just 15 minutes, though. There is a dedicated drift mode and a rally-style handbrake.
The car's dimensions have been expanded compared to the standard Renault 5 in every dimension. The Turbo weighs approximately 3,197 lb. The interior features bucket seats, Alcantara upholstery, and a digital instrument display with a retro-inspired interface. The 5 Turbo 3E also integrates the standard Renault 5's infotainment system.

The exact pricing remains undisclosed, but Renault has indicated it will be positioned below the Alpine A110 R Ultime. That's not necessarily good news - the Ultime starts at eye-watering $294,000, so the Turbo won't be cheap. The company also hints at potential future performance models, contingent on the 5 Turbo 3E's success.
