Airbus and Renault team up to accelerate electrification in both industries

Ro, 30 November 2022

Today Renault and Airbus announced a new partnership in research and development focused on energy storage in vehicles and airplanes. Combining Renault's expertise in EVs and Airbus' experience in aviation, both companies will try to develop solid-state batteries and move away from the current battery chemistry.

The two companies already have a plan to introduce a hybrid-electric aircraft. They will try to leverage the solid-state battery technology and believe that they can deliver a product by the end of this decade.

The solid-state battery will double the energy density of current Li-Ion ones and also weigh much less. Two of the major issues EV makers are facing right now with batteries and probably two of the biggest reasons we still don't have electric airplanes.

The engineering teams will work not only on the development of such batteries, but also on their recyclability and life span. The ultimate goal is for the two companies to reach net-zero emission status by 2050.
