Buick is launching its all-electric midsize SUV Electra in China and the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the photos and specifications of the upcoming vehicle. The MIIT does it so the public can actually comment on the vehicles that are proposed to be sold in China, quite an interesting concept.

The entry into MIIT catalog is the final step in a lengthy process of vehicle homologation and usually means the vehicle is ready to be launched within a few months.

The Buick Electra is nearly 4.9 meters long, 1.9 meter wide and nearly 1.7 meter tall. The wheelbase stands at 2.9 meters - all those measurements are very similar to Nio ES6 within a few millimeters.

There is only one electric motor with peak power of 180 kW (241 HP) and the battery is provided by the CATL and SIAC joint venture, unfortunately the capacity is not given at this moment. Top speed of the Buick Electra is limited to 180 km/h (112 mph).

The interesting part of the filing is the lack of LiDAR even as an option - it means that the Electra won’t offer any advanced autonomous driving and will stick just to the basic offering we are used to already - lane keeping assist, auto parking and auto braking. It’s an interesting choice but surely Buick thought this through.

Will the Buick Electra be available outside of China? Most likely not, the Chinese version is built in joint venture with SAIC and it is a China specific model. The US will get its own Buick Electra which will be based on the GM’s Ultium platform - quite different from the one used by SAIC.
