BYD's EV sales in 2023 grew a whopping 72.8% compared to 2022

We're barely into the new year and some manufacturers' sales numbers for 2023 are already out. Case in point: BYD. The Chinese behemoth sold 1,574,822 pure electric EVs last year. That's 72.8% more than in 2022, and if that doesn't signify amazingly robust growth, we don't know what does.

Pure electric EVs have accounted for 52.3% of BYD's total passenger car sales, so they now make up a majority share that is destined to just keep on growing in coming years.

For clarity, let's note that in this context, when we say BYD, we mean the entire group - so the BYD brand, of course, but also Denza (a joint-venture with Daimler), FCB (focused on off-roading), and YangWang (the luxury brand in the stable).

To celebrate the amazing year it's had, BYD is providing a CNY 666 (approximately $93 at the current exchange rate) bonus to all of its dealers for every BYD car they sold in 2023.

Aside from the great car sales numbers, in 2023 BYD has also become an even more significant player in the EV battery production space, securing 150.909GWh installed capacity for its batteries. This means it's safely in the No.2 spot globally when it comes to EV battery production, overtaken only by perpetual No.1 CATL.
