Formula E "Attack Charge" will pump 4kWh of energy into the battery in 30 seconds

The all-electric Formula E is getting ready for its upcoming Season 9, and as such has announced some updates to its sporting regulations today.

That, and a huge development in charging. A new "Attack Charge", to be introduced "at select races later in Season 9" will deliver 4kWh of energy to "the most advanced EV battery in the world today" in 30 seconds. This will be "delivered by a 600kW booster".

There will be a mandatory Attack Charge stop during a pre-determined period in a race, which will then unlock two enhanced Attack Mode periods to be deployed later in the race where the power output of the new Gen3 cars will increase from 300kW to 350kW. The existing Attack Mode format of a temporary power boost that's activated by drivers during the race will be maintained in races where Attack Charge won't feature. Fanboost, on the other hand, has been discontinued and won't be a part of Season 9.

In other news, in Season 9, Formula E races will run over laps instead of a set time period, so Safety Car and Full Course Yellow interruptions will be compensated by added laps, not added time. To give rookie drivers "a platform to impress", every team will have to complete at least two Free Practice 1 sessions during the season with a driver who has never competed in Formula E. Round 1 of Season 9 of Formula E takes places in Mexico City on January 14, 2023.
