Honda embraces China's EV revolution, cuts ICE vehicle production capacity
The winds of change sweep through the Chinese automotive landscape, and Honda sails along. Not just adapting but charging ahead. The Japanese auto giant announced it's going to slash its gasoline vehicle production capacity in China by a whopping 290,000 units. This news comes as the country doubles down on its electrification efforts, leaving traditional carmakers scrambling to keep up.
Honda's move is a full-fledged pivot towards electric vehicles. The Dongfeng Honda plant is slated to start production in September, followed by GAC Honda's new energy vehicle (NEV) plant in November. This rapid expansion is a sign of Honda's ambition to capture a significant share of China's growing EV market.
Honda's current vehicle production capacity in China spread across seven lines, stands at a substantial 1.49 million units annually. The cuts will primarily affect two joint ventures: GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda. GAC Honda will shutter its fourth production line with an annual capacity of 50,000 units in October. Meanwhile, Dongfeng Honda will shut down its second production line with a capacity of 240,000 units in November. As a result, Honda's total vehicle capacity in China will shrink to 1.2 million units.
This dramatic shift comes at a time when Chinese automakers are making significant inroads in the domestic market with their affordable, tech-laden EVs. Honda, along with other Japanese carmakers, has seen its sales dwindle in recent years. The company's sales in China in the first half of 2024 plunged by 21.48% year-on-year, a stark reminder of the urgency for change.
Honda's decision to slash gas car production isn't just a reaction to market trends; it's a proactive move to embrace the future of mobility. The company recognizes that the writing is on the wall for internal combustion engines, especially in a country like China, which is aggressively pushing for cleaner transportation solutions.
Honda's bold gamble could pay off handsomely if it can successfully capture the hearts and wallets of Chinese consumers with its new EV offerings.
