Hyundai and Kia are preparing major software upgrades

Just in case you haven't heard, the digital dashboard has officially swallowed the automobile. I still remember when the real thrill inside a new cockpit was the heavy, mechanical click of a tactile switch, or the smooth resistance of a perfectly machined aluminum volume knob. Yes, it does make me old. Unfortunately, those simple, hardware-driven days are disappearing into automotive history as global carmakers face a harsh reality - adapt to the digital age or get left behind.

Hyundai Motor Group is the latest auto giant to throw its hat into the deep end of the software pool, officially unveiling its next-generation platform, Pleos Connect. Developed under the leadership of its global software division, 42dot, this system is quite a bit more than a cosmetic overlay or a simple rearrangement of radio presets. It is a full-scale declaration of digital independence, built from the ground up on Android Automotive OS, and (apparently) designed to change how we interact with our cars.

Looking closer at the UX reveals that Pleos acts less like a legacy car menu and more like the premium smartphone tucked in your pocket. The system shifts the entire user interface to an app-based ecosystem, complete with customizable home screens and a whole store of downloadable features.

In Hyundai and Kia's case, the real estate inside the cabin is vast, dominated by either the 12.9-inch or 14.6-inch center touchscreens paired with optional crisp digital instrument clusters. This mobile-first strategy feeds directly into the auto world's newest obsession - the Function of Display marketplace - where features can be added on the fly. Yes - the marketplace means subscriptions, and Hyundai isn't the first to try this approach. And we all know how it went the last time BMW tried it.

The crown jewel of the new digital playground is Gleo AI. This large language model voice assistant ditches rigid, pre-programmed voice commands and instead learns from your conversations, cross-referencing your location, driving conditions, and even news to fetch info with often spooky timing.

Rather than cordoning this tech off inside hyper-exclusive, low-volume models with eye-watering price tags, the Koreans are going on a high-volume offensive. They initially tested the waters in South Korea with their stately flagship sedan, the new Grandeur. The market response was definitive, with buyers snatching up over 10,000 units in the very first month - that's an eighty percent sales bump compared to June 2025.

With that proof of concept secured, Hyundai is now deploying Pleos into mass-market family haulers. By the fourth quarter, the newly redesigned Avante and the incredibly popular Tucson crossover will hit the streets with the new architecture built-in, so everyday commuters can get the same high-tech smartphone convenience as executive buyers.

But the real European test for this software push dropped earlier this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the new Hyundai IONIQ 3 hit the road showing off the global version of the Pleos architecture. The IONIQ 3 is a clever compact hatchback built on the group's dedicated electric platform, measuring a tidy 163.6 inches in length, 70.9 inches in width, and standing 59.3 inches tall. Tipping the scales with an unladen weight of 3,417 lb, it makes for an interesting case study when put against other subcompact electric crossovers vying for dominance across European city centers.

For an added perspective, the newly minted Ford Puma Gen-E stretches slightly longer at 165.9 inches with a marginally chunkier width of 71.1 inches and a taller height of 61.2 inches, weighing a meatier 3,446 lb in its base configuration. The French camp has the shorter retro-chic Renault 4 E-Tech (163 inches in length), but it stands taller at 61.8 inches, and keeps its weight tighter across a range from 3,109 lb to 3,353 lb.

The software push is a well-calculated fix for historical hiccups. Hyundai clearly remembers the era when its navigation units were clunky, slow, and instantly bypassed by drivers plugging in external phone mirroring. Taking absolute ownership of the base software stack via 42dot will let Hyundai (and Kia and other brands from its extended family) take control of the entire in-car experience from end to end. The target is quite something: constructing a twenty-million-unit digital ecosystem globally by the end of the decade. Hyundai wants to rewrite its identity, evolving from a traditional car builder that bends sheet metal into a modern tech entity focused on digital subscriber relationships.

The plot thickens next year as the technology migrates across the corporate hallway to Kia models. Official corporate channels are keeping their cards close to their chests when it comes to exact model assignments, but we understand that the flagship offerings are getting the software overhaul first. The ultra-luxurious K9 sedan and the imposing EV9 three-row SUV are leading the candidate list. This makes perfect sense - if you are going to ask consumers to shell out for a premium, family-hauling electric flagship, giving it the smartest, fastest processing brain in the industry is a good way to justify its market presence.

The automotive landscape is changing very fast - old metrics like horsepower, multi-link rear suspension geometry, and obsessive panel-gap tolerances are now sharing the stage with over-the-air updates, cloud processing, and app functionality. The future of auto enthusiasm is no longer defined by the mechanical roar of an internal combustion engine. How seamlessly our vehicles anticipate our needs on the open road has become a very important part of vehicle ownership.
