Hyundai discontinues the original Ioniq

Hyundai will pull the plug on the original Ioniq this year, marking the end of the model, whose production ran from 2016. Production at the Ulsan plant will cease after July.

When it arrived in 2016, it was the first car with three electric powertrains - a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric model that began shipping in late 2016.

And ship it did, Hyundai has sold more than 135 thousand Ioniq Electric's in Europe up to December 2021. And the carmaker will continue to sell the Ioniq at least while stock lasts.

The Ioniq was an important car for Hyundai. It familiarized buyers with the brand and its electric efforts. The first electric model had a 28kWh battery with an 88kW motor that achieved 0-100 in just under 10s and had an EPA range of 200km. The second-generation upped battery size to 38kWh and power to 100kW, keeping the 0-100 sprint time and boosting WLTP range to just over 300km.
