Mazda to enter all-electric car market in 2028

Better late than never - Mazda announced it plans to join the BEV market in 2028 with the next 5 years committed to a development of new models and technology.
What exactly is the point of Mazda now?
Putting an inefficient Wankel in a slow EV as a range extender seems almost perverse. "If you want to do a longer journey you can but you'll emit more carbon dioxide than a straight ICEV".
The Wankel is dead, increasingly bizarre attempts to bring it back seem pointless when they could have done a BMW and just used a motorcycle engine; I'm sure Yamaha would have sold them something suitable.
