This trailer can apparently extend the range of Hyundai Ioniq 5

04 December 2022
It is not a range extender and it doesn’t have batteries or solar panels - it simply improves aerodynamic efficiency of the car that tows it and in case of an EV - it extends its range.

Man charging 5 or 10km over a whole weekend is like imagining dark age tech.
5-10km for a todays cars which can go as far as 600 or 1200km without refueling is really bad.
Is like to have a 1TB of disk space in a phone and putting an old 64 megabytes memory card inside for external storage.

Fearghast, 06 Dec 2022The version with solar and own battery can do that :-D it is in the article.Man yes but like powerbanks for phones with solar panes takes ages and eons to charge even by laughable 5% this going to be same.
This is not suitable and will not help anyone.

But i wonder what could happen if we imagibne a solar tech will be good enough to recharge batteries as quick as charging by cable or lets say 50% slower. I.E. car takes for example 3 hours to charge via cable and will take 6 hours via this trailer using only solar energy.
It would change many things.

But I am probably overly optimistic, as the battery in the trailer and solar panel with provide power for something like refrigerator or heating ... so probably no extra energy to add some range back to the EV.

Every corner is more difficult, every time you start rolling it consumes considerably more energy etc.

BTW, I love the info on a new Prius, with new generation of solar claiming it should be possible to charge the car in a week, 13 kWh battery, that's not bad.

We already see very little extra consuption with normal trailers. So with an aero trailer it will be even better.

It is against very basic, primary grade, physics.
Unfortunately, obviously today buyers have more money than brain...

Sounds pretty silly if this heavy thing which makes your car slover capable of range extending.
I definitely not believe into this.
Better idea it should be if it will pack its own batteries able to recharge car who standing still.
Just like the powerbank but on wheels.

It is a nice idea, but sadly not really practical - it adds weight and drag for pretty much everything BUT a big SUV.
It's a good idea, certainly better than alternatives, solar panels are a nice touch as well as if you could connect it back to the EV, it could charge like 5-10 km of range over the sunny weekend.
