The disconcerting truth about modern cars and your privacy

10 September 2023
Modern cars are no longer just vehicles. They're powerful data collection machines, often compromising privacy in the name of innovation. The real cost of these advancements, however, might be our personal data.

Fearghast, 10 Sep 2023It is nothing like smartphones or personalized ad tracking that you can actually turn off and ... moreThis isn't true across the board, though. My BMW-manufactured vehicle allows me to turn off data collection for some specifics if I choose to. Other manufacturers do the same thing. They just don't let you turn off all data collection (like with smartphones and credit cards, etc).

Fearghast, 10 Sep 2023It is nothing like smartphones or personalized ad tracking that you can actually turn off and ... moreWell, its too tough to make a phone not share data. Involving probably many levels of rooting, installing another distribution, so yes, its possible, but not practical for many of us.
But yes, agreed.
The car scene is going bad, they're helping you play tetris on its display, in exchange of this rubbish data collection. :(

Data is new oil.
Everyone wants to grab as much data as possible for all different reasons.

These brands can so easily collect user's precious personal details without any regards for user privacy. This data seems to be cheapest source of earning, car companies have to implement a system to track & collect user data and then they can collect as much data as possible.

More worrisome fact is that not only cheap car brands but luxury brands are not sparing their poor customers. These luxury brands that want you to pay thousand dollars for almost every possible feature & yet even after drilling into customer pockets so much ,these brands seems not fully satisfied & collect data to sell it to third party buyers.

All that points towards a hint that how worrisome things can get in this new era of technology. Privacy that seems to be a fundamental right of anyone becomes a tool for corporates to earn profits.

Car companies and their abysmal software collects pretty much every data possible, does not let you control the method of sharing to possible third parties and won't let you delete your personal data easily.

Car were always software nightmares, with more sensors they became more and more a privacy nightmare as well. Google, Apple and other are user and privacy angels compared to this mess.

Its a good effort though, I appreciate the effort and the intention... Thank you for this.

Sad, but it's about the same with mobile phones. I often see youtube recommendations on my PC, about things I talked about with my mobile in presence, even though my mobile has not even my googe id logged in.
And with Android versions going up, things are going worse, I can assure you with personal experiences with Android versions 4.4, 10 and 13, but will you type an article on GSMArena on this topic?

You're typing in an article, good, but its only because e-cars are newly into data mining. Eventually, there'll be standards but they'll instead exploit the customer more.

Sadly, 5 years down the line, we'll have worse data collection methods and standards, and yet, no such article will be found, because things would've been accepted, tolerated or legalised.
