Gartner: In three years EVs will be cheaper to build than ICE cars

08 March 2024
Electric cars are getting cheaper to build, but expensive to fix, and the competition within the market is escalating into a full-blown brawl, raising questions about the true cost of progress.

In 2016 y'all on your GSMArena site made an article titled "Production cost of AMOLED screens is now lower than LCD's"

8 years later, cheaper phones still use LCDs.

Something tells me this is going to be even more incorrect than last time. We'll see in 11 years.

When Apple stops making or trying to make something, it does not mean it does not make sense. Apple development is simply utter chaos, just like in every big company. Apple one is simply even worse due to self-imposed, restrictions they are trying to solve not with brain but with throwing more money at the wall.

In the current state of technology EVs are the dead end. Apple stopped EV development not without a reason. Maybe in 20-30 years new technology will allow EVs to become as practical and useful as ICEs, but before that EVs will remain just expensive toys.

Making the car oput of 1-2-3 big parts mean that one small accident means replacing the entire body (or half of it?) = writeoff.
That is insanely not ecological and certtainly not economical for users. We need them to be repairable. We could make them perhaps cost half or 1/3 of the price and then it's ok if they are "throwaway" cars but I feel that is conceptually against any sustainablity efforts.

Already is. The reason most EVs are currently expensive is that people are not willing to sacrifice lower range and DC charging performance for lower cost. Tesla Model 3 is BMW 3 series class car that is now cheaper than the BMW. BYD EVs cost the same as Toyota ICE cars of the same class. BYD Seal is only $11k which is a good car for most of the world except US and wealthy Middle east countries.

Cheaper manufacturing for sure, but cheaper as in general for the user? I am not so sure.

And ICE cars can't use "gigacasting"? I don't see a reason why not unless manufacturers stop investing in them.
