On one hand these governments make it difficult to own a IC engine or even a self charging hybrid car (by imposing tolls, parking charges etc) on the other hand they do nothing to make electric car affordable for common people. That £1500 grant was a joke anyway, when you'd have to spend £40000 or more to get a car with adequate range. This is now government joining car manufacturers to rip us consumers off.

I'm not against electric cars at all, but I'm against forcing it on people when practical use of this technology isn't affordable for common person.

Anything less than 350mile range is impractical, given you'd need ages to charge it. And most people don't have a secure driveway where they could charge it.

The most practical option today is getting a self charging hybrid car.

They are getting more expensive to buy and despite shifting to electric they are getting more expensive to run. The Norwegian government was considering cutting the subsidies as well because they want not just electric cars on the roads but they want less cars altogether on the roads. The future they have in mind for us involves bicycles, public transport and a lot of walking...

You have also not mentioned road tax, of which is roughly £305 or £338/yr (petrol and diesel) per car. Its estimated a hole of around £40 billion a year, between fuel and road tax.

I think that over time, having a personal car will become more and more pricy or considered as a 'luxury' in a lot in EU countries ... And we have to change the mean of transportation for a lot of our 'general' journey :)
