Toyota's solid-state battery effort wasn't an engineering one, but PR campaign.

They've been talking about hearing solid state batteries for years. I expect in three years it will be more of the same. Another 3 years.

As a Toyota fan, I've been reading countless announcements from Toyota about nearing solid state launches for at least 4 years. And yet the Chinese are the ones who actually launched improved versions of batteries in various forms all these times. Wake up and get real Toyota. PR only gets you so far before it turns around and bites away the trust from your fans. If you have nothing, stay quiet and work your brain out. You have more than enough under your hood if you really want to do it.

TBH, I hope Toyota can pull it off, but I would much rather see a bit leap in efficiency when it comes to powertrains, HVACs and other infotainment related parts.

I expect Fast charging to be more ubiquitous. Especially in developed countries. Rest of the world would be behind but they wont drive that much. I expect public transport to play a bigger role in developing countries.

Meanwhile, MG announced they will release EV with solid state battery in 2025. Seems like Toyota is still one year behind the competition, atleast. If they are planning to sell this in EV in 2030, then 5 years behind. Toyota should take EVs seriously or risk being extinct.

Good job, Japan! 600 miles range and 10-minute charge time? That's crazy good

I would happily take a plug-in hybrid with longer range than a pure EV. EV's just aren't convenient where I live and I don't want to keep a separate ICE car around for when my EV is going to be a hassle on a long trip (especially in winter). Currently driving a 15 year old hybrid who's battery is on borrowed time at this point. Hoping to get a couple more years before buying new.
