Huawei's autonomous tech to power BYD's Bao 8 SUV

Max McDee, 27 August 2024

Chinese auto giant BYD has announced a partnership with tech powerhouse Huawei. The collaboration will see Huawei's advanced autonomous driving system, Qiankun ADS 3.0, integrated into BYD's upcoming Bao 8 SUV, when it hits the roads later this year under the Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand.

BYD will leverage Huawei's software expertise to better compete with established luxury brands. The first half of this year saw BYD's premium brands, including Fang Cheng Bao, account for just 5% of total sales.

For Huawei, the deal cements its growing influence in the automotive sector. The tech giant's advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) has been gaining traction, with Volkswagen's Audi also opting for Huawei's tech in its EVs destined for the Chinese market.

The Bao 8, scheduled for release after the third quarter, will be the first vehicle featuring Huawei's Qiankun ADS 3.0. This latest system promises a "human-like, safer, and more efficient driving experience." The system is designed to handle various complex scenarios. With an estimated price tag of RMB 500,000 ($70,180), the Bao 8 will take on established players like Great Wall Motor's Tank 700 Hi-4-T.

While BYD has been a dominant force in the EV market, its strength lies in its aggressive pricing and value for money. The company has lately invested a lot in in-house ADAS development, but for its high-end models, it has relied on external suppliers. The Huawei partnership is just a shortcut to accelerate BYD's upscale push.
