Ram unveils 1500 Revolution electric pickup truck

Max McDee, 06 January 2023

Yet another electric truck debuted at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show as Ram unveiled its 1500 Revolution BEV concept. Serving as a preview of an electric 1500 pickup that is set to be released in 2024 it gives insight into the company's future plans and design direction.

The EV features a long wheelbase and a sloping windscreen for a streamlined appearance. The front end has a blacked-out look with an illuminated badge between the LED headlights, which have a "tuning fork" design. LEDs are also used for the taillights and the Ram emblem on the tailgate. The bumper has a large skid plate with built-in tow hooks.

The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept is an all-wheel drive electric vehicle built on the body-on-frame STLA Frame EV platform. It has two electric motors, one on each axle, for propulsion. While no information was provided on power outputs or performance statistics, Ram claims that its 800-volt DC rapid charging system can accept up to 350 kW of power and add up to 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

The vehicle also has rear-wheel steering with up to 15 degrees of freedom for improved maneuverability in tight spaces and at low speeds, and an air suspension that can be adjusted to three different levels: ingress/egress, aero, or off-road.

The Revolution features a motorized trunk, charging port, flush door handles, side steps, and a rear step. It is likely that many of these features will be included in the production version, particularly on higher trim levels. The tailgate can extend outward, similar to barn doors, to increase the length of the bed and allow for the transportation of larger cargo.

The Revolution also has coach (suicide) doors - the rear doors open in the opposite direction as the front doors. This allows Ram to eliminate the B-pillar, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle. While it is unlikely that these doors will be included in the production version, the use of 3D-printed cameras as lightweight replacements for sideview mirrors may be available in certain markets.

The 1500 Revolution is equipped with 35-inch diameter tires on 24-inch diameter wheels, with illuminated stationary center caps that rotate with the wheel, similar to those on Rolls-Royces.

The EV drivetrain has allowed the design team to make the cabin four inches longer than the current petrol model adding a significant amount ot extra space. There's also a frunk and what the company calls "Ram Track" - a rail connection enabling flexibility for the seats and storage.

The rails continue in the trunk, helping secure items. The lightweight chairs can be folded flat or removed completely and are equipped with integrated seatbelts, grab handles, and speakers.

Similar to the Subaru Brat from the 1970s, the truck has the optional third-row jump seats in the motorized mid-gate that can be attached in the bed. Ram has not released any photos showing the jump seats, but the mid-gate is also said to have a pass-through that reaches the front trunk (or "frunk"). This feature, which was previously seen on the Bollinger B2, allows for the transportation of items up to 18 feet in length.

In line with the concept of a customizable cabin, the center console can be removed to create more space inside the vehicle, and the armrest can be converted into a workstation. The dashboard features the "tuning fork" design with orange ambient lighting and a dual display configuration with a combined screen size of 28 inches.

The top screen appears to be able to slide on the Ram Track system, while the bottom screen can be detached and used as a tablet. The lower screen can also be switched between three different viewing modes: a minimum view, an expanded view, or a full screen view.

As expected for an electric truck, the cabin is equipped with all sorts of modern niceties including a head-up display with augmented reality, a voice-activated assistant powered by artificial intelligence, and a 360-degree camera system.

The steering wheel has mini displays and the glass canopy has electro-chromatic panels that can independently adjust their transparency. The interior is made with environmentally friendly materials including leather made from a waste product of the apple industry and a floor made from recycled rubber and cork, among other eco-friendly components.

The Ram 1500 Revolution includes a feature called Shadow Mode, which allows the truck to automatically follow the driver as they walk ahead, potentially saving time on short trips around a construction site.

Ram states that the concept vehicle has Level 3 autonomous driving capability and allows the steering wheel to be retracted.

External projectors can also transform the truck into a mobile movie theater. The truck can be controlled remotely through a phone app, which can also help you determine the most efficient way to transport items in the Revolution.

More information about the production version of the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV will be released in the coming months, leading up to its launch in 2024. The concept gives a strong indication of what the final product vehicle will be like and the new technologies that Ram plans to introduce in the electric truck market.
