Nio opens 2,000th battery swap station in China
Electric vehicles are all the rage, but for many potential owners, the inconvenience of frequent and long charging sessions looms large. Nio, China's prominent EV company, takes a different approach with its expanding network of battery swap stations. It's not about plugging in anymore, it's about swapping out.
Nio just reached a significant milestone, inaugurating its 2,000th battery swap station in China. Located at the Baoji West service area on the G30 Lianyungang-Khorgos highway.
With this achievement, Nio inches closer to its ambitious target of establishing 2,300 swap stations by the year's end. That compares to a total of 1,300 station that the company had by last year. For more perspective, it took the company from May 20, 2018, when it opened its first station in Shenzhen, until July 6, 2022, to reach its 1,000th station.
Nio estimates 77.1% of its car owners can locate at least one battery swap station within a 3-kilometer radius from their homes. In major urban centers like Shanghai and Shenzhen, this convenience figure jumps to over 90%.
Shen Fei, Nio Power's Senior Vice President, shared some impressive stats, "Almost 31 million power swap operations have been conducted by Nio, averaging nearly 60,000 daily. This translates to a car leaving a Power Swap Station every 1.4 seconds with a fully charged battery." Shen's envisions a future where EV recharging is more efficient than traditional refueling. Nio's mission, as he articulates, is to "support users to travel in smart EVs without any range concerns."
And if you'd rather plug in than change batteries Nio boasts 1,867 supercharging stations equipped with 8,868 superchargers and 1,415 destination charging stations featuring 10,234 chargers across China.
Recently Nio started exporting its comprehensive suite of services to Europe. The continent already hosts 27 Nio battery swap stations and 11 charging stations managed by the maker.
