Nio to bring battery swap stations to the United Kingdom in 2023

Eleanor Sand, the Network Development Lead at Nio, announced that the company will be installing Power Swap Stations (PSS) throughout the United Kingdom in 2023. Sand posted a message on LinkedIn stating that Nio is looking for locations in all cities in the UK to host the stations and encouraged landowners or CPOs to contact the company for more information.

Nio currently operates over 1,300 Power Swap Stations (PSS) in China and just 10 PSS in Europe. The company's founder, William Li, has stated that the goal is to have 1,700 PSS in China by 2023. Nio plans to have 120 PSS in Europe by the end of 2023 and aims to have a total of 4,000 PSS operational worldwide by 2025, with 1,000 of these stations located outside of China. This year, the company plans to build 400 new PSS in China and 110 new PSS in Europe.

Nio's initial goal was to have 20 Power Swap Stations (PSS) in Europe by the end of 2022, but that target was later revised downward to 17-18 stations by the company's CEO, Qin Lihong. As of December 29, the total number of PSS in Europe is 10, with the tenth and final station launching in Den Hoorn, Netherlands. This station is the third one to be located in the Netherlands. Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has a goal of establishing a presence in 25 countries by 2025. In October, the company expanded into its first European Union countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The company is also targeting the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, and Spain as part of its international expansion plans.

In addition to its expansion into various European countries, Nio has also established its first European Union Nio House in Berlin, Germany. The company currently operates three other Nio Spaces in addition to a smaller Nio House in Norway. There are currently about ten new Nio Houses and Spaces under construction in Europe, the locations of which can be found on the company's website.

Nio's expansion plans do not stop in Europe, as the company intends to enter the United States market before 2025. In November last year, the company's founder, William Li, confirmed this plan and stated that the next generation of Nio vehicles would be arriving in the United States. It is not clear what Li meant by "next generation," but some members of the Chinese media speculate that it may refer to the company's next generation platform, known as NT 3.0.

Despite being a relatively new entrant to the European market, Nio is not entirely new to the United States. In October 2016, the company opened its first office in North America and appointed Padmasree Warrior as the CEO of Nio in the United States. While Warrior is no longer with the company, Nio has recently started a hiring push at its Silicon Valley headquarters and has posted several new job openings related to US auto safety compliance.

On December 24, Nio unveiled its brand new Generation 3 Power Swap Station during Nio Day. The company claims that the station is capable of performing 408 battery swaps per day, which is an increase from the approximately 300 swaps that the previous Generation 2 station could handle. The Generation 3 station also has a larger capacity for storing batteries, with the ability to hold 21 batteries compared to the 13 that the Generation 2 station can store.
