Ram unveils the all-electric 1500 REV and opens order books

Two things are happening here at once - first is the already much talked-about Ram’s advertising campaign under the banner of “Premature Electrification, and then is the subject of the campaign - the all-electric 1500 REV.

Apart from unveiling the final production design, the company is actually keeping quiet about any specification or performance figures for its first-ever electric pickup truck. The truck itself is nothing to shout about and it looks nothing like the 1500 Revolution concept introduced only last month in Las Vegas.

There will be a lot of disappointed people out there who were hoping the 1500 REV would be a decent competition for the Cybertruck, at least in the looks department. Ram went down the conservative route and followed Ford F-150 Lightning looking for traditional pickup truck buyers but offering them the convenience of the new electric drive.

The truck itself looks attractive, the new light signature LEDs up front together with the backlit Ram logo definitely do stand out. There are no photos of the interior and no information about the truck apart from the fact that order books are wide open. For a measly $100 anyone can jump in and put their name down but the deliveries are not expected until late next year.

The advertising campaign started by Ram under the cheeky name of “Premature Electrification” reveals a couple of interesting points. First, we actually do get to see the interior of the 1500 REV, although for a really brief moment. From that couple of seconds shot we can confirm there is no revolution on the inside of the truck, the interior is very much like the one in its gas-powered siblings.

During the innuendo-filled advert, the narrator mentions something that raises more questions than it gives answers. He goes on to say “Ram 1500 REV with options being designed to extend range” - is that a hint that the first all-electric Ram pickup truck will come with a built-in range extender? Watch it yourself and tell us what you think:

The company is highly optimistic about the 1500 REV and claims it will lead in range, towing capability and other departments that are so important to truck buyers. If the company is going to deliver on those promises, we’ll see a power output to beat the F-150 Lightning 580 hp drivetrain. We’ll see a towing capacity of at least 10,000 lbs and Ram has already promised 500 miles of range.

That’s a lot of promises and as we know, when it comes to electric vehicles, towing and range are two enemies. While 500 miles may be possible when empty and with some tail wind, towing makes the range disappear in no time at all. The electric pickup truck market is finally getting interesting.

I'm terribly saddened about the fact that the actual truck is not like the concept, aesthetically. There was no other electric truck comparable to it. Suicide doors, panoramic roof, a luxurious and fully functional interior! When I saw the conce...
