Rivian R2 specs leak - 330 miles of range, $47,500 price

Rivian, the EV startup that wowed the world with its adventure-ready electric truck and SUV, is about to pull the covers off its follow-up act. The R2, a smaller and more affordable electric SUV, has had its specs leaked just days before its official reveal. If these are true, Rivian could soon be a serious challenger in the highly competitive EV segment.

So, what tasty bits of information did this leak reveal? First off, the R2 is apparently targeting a roughly $47,000 starting price. That's a good chunk of change cheaper than the existing Rivian R1 models, putting it more squarely in competition with the mega-popular Tesla Model Y.

Next, the R2 is claimed to hit a very respectable 330 miles of range on a single charge and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk three seconds. Not earth-shattering compared to some EVs, but plenty to satisfy those wanting a guilt-free driving experience that's also a bit of a thrill.

On the practical side, the R2 is said to have seating for five and dimensions falling roughly between a Model Y and a Ford Mustang Mach-E. True to Rivian's reputation, this SUV seems set for some off-road fun with a possible ground clearance of up to 9.8 inches. The R1T truck and R1S SUV are fantastic, but their premium prices limit their appeal. A more attainable, yet capable, R2 will open the brand to a much wider audience.

Naturally, it's important to exercise healthy skepticism. This is a leak, after all. It could be a placeholder, a test, or perhaps even a bit of intentional buzz-making. The numbers aren't yet confirmed by Rivian, so we'll have to wait for the official reveal on March 7th to see what's really in store with the much-anticipated R2. Until then, we're keeping those grains of salt close at hand.
