Rugged Volvo EX30 Cross Country unveiled in Sweden

Volvo has a long history of creating Cross Country versions of its vehicles, starting with the V70 in 1997. These models offer a bit more ground clearance and some extra rugged exteriors, making them suitable for light off-road adventures. Now, Volvo is bringing this tradition to the electric vehicle market with the EX30 Cross Country. This compact electric SUV debuted in Stockholm, Sweden, and aims to provide drivers with a blend of practicality, style, and off-road capability.

The EX30 itself is a compact SUV, similar in size to the Hyundai Kona Electric. It has already proven popular in Europe, only trailing the Tesla Model Y in sales last year. In the United States, the twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is currently the only available option, priced at $44,990. A less expensive, single-motor version is expected to be released in the spring, starting at $36,245. Pricing for the Cross Country version has not been officially announced, but it is anticipated to be around $48,000.

Both the standard EX30 and the Cross Country variant share the same powertrain. The twin-motor setup delivers 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. This is ample power for both city driving and venturing off the beaten path. The EX30 Cross Country offers the choice of 19-inch wheels or special 18-inch wheels with off-road tires.

The rugged EV comes with a 64 kWh battery pack, which can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes using a DC fast charger. The EPA estimates the standard EX30's range at 253 miles, but the Cross Country's slightly increased ride height and knobby tires will reduce this figure.

The EX30 Cross Country's ground clearance has been increased by 0.75 inches, bringing the total to 7.8 inches. This is surprisingly less than the Toyota bZ4X's 8.7 inches, but it is still a respectable amount for a small electric SUV designed for light off-roading. Volvo has also adjusted the suspension to improve articulation over uneven terrain.

Visually, the EX30 Cross Country distinguishes itself with several unique features. It sports Volvo's Cross Country badging on the hatch and C-pillar. Functional additions include robust front and rear skid plates, as well as durable black cladding around the wheel arches and a blacked-out section on the hatch lid. A topographic map of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Sweden is subtly embossed on the black grille, adding a touch of Swedish heritage.

The Volvo EX30 Cross Country isn't intended to compete with hardcore off-road vehicles. Instead, it offers a practical and stylish electric SUV with enhanced capabilities for those who occasionally venture off paved roads. It's a niche vehicle, but it fills that niche well, providing a compelling option for drivers seeking a small, rugged electric vehicle.
