The Ioniq 5 N: Hyundai's first high-performance EV

Hyundai Motor Company has finally introduced the Ioniq 5 N at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed. This exciting addition to the N brand's lineup marks Hyundai's foray into the high-performance, all-electric segment. It sets a new standard for driving enthusiasts who want to take an electric car on a racetrack for the first time without worrying about the warranty.

Hyundai leverages the award-winning E-GMP-based Ioniq 5 platform as the foundation for N's first high-performance EV. By blending its longstanding legacy of high-quality mobility with the thrilling N brand's motorsport DNA, the Ioniq 5 N is here to redefine what it means to drive an electric vehicle.

Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the significance of the N brand, stating, "Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company. N brand's winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in Ioniq 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance."

The Ioniq 5 N boasts performance-enhancing features that make it a real contender on the road and track. Equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, the clever Corner Rascal capabilities of the Ioniq 5 N are promising. With additional structure welding points, reinforced motor and battery mounting, and integrated drive axles inspired by World Rally Championship technology, this electric powerhouse pledges to deliver exceptional handling and control.

Hyundai N engineers have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing a thrilling driving experience. The N Pedal, a unique intelligent software function, offers enhanced throttle sensitivity, ensuring exhilarating performance. Meanwhile, the N Drift Optimizer and N Torque Distribution systems further enhance the car's capabilities, allowing drivers to maintain the drift angle and adjust torque distribution for maximum control. While some of us may be shaking heads in disapproval, being able to master a decent slide through the corner without countless hours of practice (and dozens of decimated tires) will be one heck of an experience.

Regarding racetrack capability, the Ioniq 5 N leaves no room for compromise. Its electric motors produce an impressive 478 kW (650 PS) with N Grin Boost engaged, offering exhilarating acceleration and performance. The vehicle's improved battery cooling system and enhanced PE (power electronics) system enable it to perform at its peak, even under the most demanding track conditions. The N Brake Regen system also provides the industry-leading decelerative force, ensuring optimal braking performance and endurance.

One of the common concerns among performance enthusiasts considering electric vehicles is the need for driver feedback. Hyundai N engineers believe they found an answer by introducing the N e-shift and N Active Sound+ functions. The N e-shift simulates the gearshift feel of ICE-powered vehicles, giving the drivers a more engaging driving experience. On the other hand, the N Active Sound+ system fills the air with futuristic sounds for Star Trek fans or pretends to have pistons and exhaust for those who can't just yet entirely give up on the legacy of combustion power.

From a design standpoint, the Ioniq 5 N quietly combines performance and aerodynamic excellence. The black trim parts add much-needed contrast, and the sizable rear spoiler and lowered stance will attract attention on the road. The front bumper features functional mesh and active air flaps for optimal cooling. At the same time, the N-exclusive' Luminous Orange' (which in the photos comes out red) accents highlight its sporty character. Add the forged 21-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in high-grip Pirelli P-Zero tires, and the aggressive look is complete.

Hyundai had plenty of time to develop every bit of the Ioniq 5 N, and it seamlessly blends functionality with performance-focused design elements inside the cabin. The race-inspired N steering wheel, adorned with the N logo and intuitive buttons, allows drivers to customize and select their preferred driving modes. The serious N bucket seats provide excellent support and stability, ensuring at the same time a comfortable experience - quite a feat. And, of course, the N e-shift and N Active Sound+ turn the entire experience to 11 by simulating the feel and sound of more traditional sports cars.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a true testament to Hyundai's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle performance. The Ioniq 5 N is a real game-changer in the high-performance EV segment with its cutting-edge technologies, driving dynamics, and striking design. All the extra functions, like the simulated gear change and engine noise, might be a gimmick but will be instantly forgotten the moment we sit behind that wheel and point this electric missile toward the next bend. Was the Ioniq 5 N worth waiting for? It seems so, and it looks like Hyundai has outdone itself to ensure the N legacy is not diluted but enhanced by EV technology.
