The Chevrolet Spark EUV is back, looks suspiciously familiar

Max McDee, 28 January 2025

The Chevrolet Spark EV is back, but not as you might remember it. The new Spark EUV is a four-door electric crossover that recently debuted in Brazil. It's a far cry from the disappointing Spark EV that was discontinued in the United States in 2016.

The all-new Spark EUV has a rear-mounted electric motor and an LFP battery pack. It's expected to have a range of around 249 miles on a single charge. The Spark EUV is also expected to be available with a variety of features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a suite of driver-assistance features.

However, there's one big catch: the Spark EUV is not a Chevrolet in any sense. It's actually a badge-engineered version of the Baojun Yep Plus, a Chinese-made electric car. The Baojun Yep Plus is built by the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture, and it's been on sale in China since last year.

So why is Chevrolet selling a Chinese car under its own name? There are a few possible explanations. First, it's most likely that Chevrolet is looking to save money by rebadging an existing car. Second, Chevrolet may be trying to tap into the growing demand for electric cars in Brazil. The third and least likely reason is the possibility of Chevrolet trying to avoid the tariffs that would be imposed on a Chinese-made car if it were imported into the United States.

Whatever the reason, the Spark EUV is a curious case. It's a Chevrolet in name only, and it's unclear whether it will ever be sold in the United States. Will it come to Europe? This compact Chevy-Baojun is a sign of the times, as automakers increasingly look to China for affordable electric cars.

The Spark EUV is expected to go on sale in Brazil later this year. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
