Volkswagen teases amped up sporty ID. Buzz GTX

Max McDee, 16 March 2024

Forget those notions of boring minivans – Volkswagen is turning up the heat with the upcoming ID. Buzz GTX. Slated for a March 21st debut, the iconic VW minivan is getting an electrifying makeover. GTX version promises performance, style, and all-wheel-drive punch in a package that's - apparently - surprisingly sporty.

If the name "GTX" sounds familiar, it should. Volkswagen uses this badge for its peppy, high-performance electric models. The ID. Buzz GTX joins the just-revealed ID.3 GTX hot hatch and ID.7 GTX Tourer - who said that EVs have to be all sensible and subdued?

Spotting an ID. Buzz GTX on the road will be easy. Volkswagen has added styling touches that give it a bolder personality. Look for a redesigned front bumper with a sporty honeycomb intake, those signature triangular LED daytime running lights that are a GTX trademark, and stylish new alloy wheels to complete the look.

But the most exciting updates are where you don't immediately see them. The ID. Buzz GTX boasts a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup delivering an impressive 335 horsepower (250 kW). Volkswagen hasn’t released any more technical details yet, but since the GTX version will be using the same APP550 powertrain that Cupra Tavascan VZ is built around, we can comfortably expect to see at least 398 lb-ftof torque. This power, and that ridiculous torque, will catapult the ID. Buzz from 0-62 mph in a brisk 6.4 seconds. That's impressive acceleration for a vehicle built for family adventures rather than track days.

Don't worry, the GTX still delivers all the practicality you expect from an ID. Buzz. It's based on the long-wheelbase version, offering a spacious three-row interior courtesy of its 192.4 inches length. You'll find plenty of space for the whole crew and their gear, just with a generous dose of sporty spirit.

Volkswagen is likely to tweak the suspension of the GTX for improved handling without sacrificing that smooth minivan ride quality. Comfort is still king, but expect sharper cornering and more confident control when taking a twisty road by surprise.

The excitement isn't limited to the ID. Buzz GTX. Volkswagen hints at more reveals during its Annual Press Conference on March 21st, suggesting we might see some additional surprises in their electric vehicle pipeline.

The ID. Buzz GTX is a welcome disruptor, blending the utility of a minivan with a surprising dose of performance. It finally signals a fun shift in VW’s electric vehicle approach, where even practical EVs can offer a thrilling driving experience. Who knows, the ID. Buzz GTX might just tempt some SUV-loving families to make the electric minivan leap.
