VW will build its own new factory to make Scout pickup trucks and SUVs in the US

Volkswagen is getting more and more serious about making a dent in the nascent electric pickup truck market in the US. It picked up (excuse the cheap pun) the brand Scout through a merger in 2020, and plans to use it as a spinoff that will focus on solely making "true American" electric SUVs and pickup trucks.

And according to a new report today, Volkswagen will build its own, entirely new factory in the US to make the Scout brand vehicles. Previously, it was thought that the company would contract out manufacturing to the likes of Foxconn or Magna.

Now though, "business circles" have told Automobilwoche that Volkswagen is taking matters directly into its own hands. This should tell you how serious the company is about making Scout a successful enterprise.

The first two Scout-branded vehicles are set to enter production in 2026 - one will be an electric pickup truck, the other a "robust SUV". The new Volkswagen factory may 'conceivably' also produce Audi vehicles.

Seen in the picture above is Scout CEO Scott Keogh, who was appointed in July of last year. Before taking on this role, he was the head of VW's North American business. The original Scout was an off-roader built in the 1960s in the US to compete with Jeep. In November, we saw a silhouette released by the VW spinoff, showing the upcoming Scout truck.
