Xiaomi stock soars as SU7 orders explode and new electric SUV nears launch
Xiaomi's stock price in Hong Kong jumped by 6.75% on Monday. Investors are excited because the company's first car, the SU7, is a hit. The stock ended the day at HK$30.98. Some companies might be struggling to sell EVs, but Xiaomi have found a secret recipe for success.
In just six weeks, the company received more than 70,000 locked-in orders for the refreshed SU7 sedan. For a brand that only recently started making cars, these numbers are quite impressive. To keep things moving smoothly, Xiaomi is making some changes to how they build the vehicles. Starting May 6, they will remove some of the extra options buyers can pick. This sounds like they are taking away choices, but they are doing it to make the factory work faster.
If you are a shopper in China looking for a deal, you have to move fast. The special "launch perks" for the SU7 are ending on May 5 at midnight. For the Standard and Pro versions, these extras are worth RMB 44,000, which is about £4,690.
The top-end version of the car is the SU7 Max, and its free extras are worth even more at RMB 69,000. This includes a cabin that is extra quiet and parts made of lightweight carbon fiber. After the May 5 deadline, these deals go away. Xiaomi says that even if they stop offering a certain color or seat type, they will still keep spare parts for repairs. They don't want early buyers to worry about fixing their cars ten years from now.
The SU7 Standard starts at RMB 219,900. If you want a bit more, the Pro version costs RMB 249,900, and the high-end Max model costs RMB 303,900. These prices are very competitive, especially since the car looks like something that should cost twice as much. In April alone, the company delivered more than 30,000 vehicles - a big jump from the 21,440 cars they delivered in March.
Xiaomi is about to launch a high-performance SUV called the YU7 GT. This new model will arrive in late May. Replying to some customers who asked why it isn't called the "Ultra" like the sedan, the company explained that "Ultra" is for cars that live on racing tracks and the YU7 GT is meant for "grand touring." This means it is a sports car that balances luxury with a lot of speed.
The YU7 GT is a beast when it comes to power. Its electric motors deliver 738 kW, which is 990 horsepower and it can hit a top speed of 186 mph. The GT version uses 21-inch wheels and heavy-duty Brembo brakes. It also has a big 101.7 kWh battery that provides a range of 438 miles on a single charge.
This new SUV measures 197.4 inches in length and 79 inches in width. It stands 62.9 inches tall and has a 118 inches wheelbase. Rows of these SUVs are already piling up at the factory. Most of them are painted in a deep burgundy color. They are likely being prepared to be sent to showrooms across the country so people can see them in person later this month.
The company wants to deliver 550,000 cars by the end of 2026. In the first three months of this year, it already delivered 80,856 vehicles - a 6.6% increase compared to last year. Xiaomi now holds about 1.9% of the car market in China.
