Xpeng releases first photo of the upcoming G6 electric SUV
The Shanghai Auto Show is only a couple of weeks away and it is going to be a busy event. Xpeng is preparing to launch the latest electric SUV there - the G6. The company released the first official image of the car to mark the official start of the marketing campaign.
A lot is riding on the Xpeng G6, the car is considered by many analysts as having the potential to turn the company's fortunes around. It hasn't had the best times recently, with its sales sliding and then failing to recover meaningfully.
Xpeng is pricing the G6 from RMB 200,000 ($29,250) and it hopes to sell at least 5,000 units per month, which are nearly 3 times more than the sales numbers of the P7. The company is preparing to produce as many as 15,000 G6 per month by the end of this year.
At 4.75 meters in length, the G6 is marginally longer than the Tesla Model Y. The two cars have an identical wheelbase of 2.89 meters and as a result, the two will be seen as direct competitors. Tesla bests the G6 in the performance department though, even in its entry-level RWD trim.
The G6 will have two powertrains - a single-electric motor with 218kW (292hp) powering rear wheels and the AWD option will add a 140kW (187hp) electric motor powering front wheels. That’s still 20kW less than the AWD Model Y, but Xpeng hopes the price difference will be enough to make up for it.
There will be two battery options available, the cheaper will be an LFP pack while the more expensive and larger battery will be of the ternary chemistry. We don’t know the capacities yet but both the Xpeng G3 and P5 start with 66kWh batteries and since the P5 is nearly identical in size, we can expect the G6 to use the same battery.
We are likely to see more photos of the Xpeng G6 and details in the next couple of weeks. The company will make sure to create as much buzz around its new electric SUV - after all, its future depends on it.
