XPeng X9 MPV to officially launch on January 1 2024

XPeng is set to launch its much-anticipated X9 MPV on January 1, 2024. Following a showing at the Guangzhou auto show, the X9 went on pre-sale with a starting price of RMB 388,000 yuan ($54,500). While the company had initially slated the deliveries for December, the event has been pushed to the first day of the new year, leaving enthusiasts waiting just a tad longer.

The XPeng X9, measuring 208.4 inches in length, 78.3 inches in width, and 70.3 inches in height, with a 124.4 inches wheelbase, aims to carve its own niche in the MPV segment. The detailed breakdown of versions remain shrouded in mystery, with XPeng teasing the revelation on the much-anticipated launch day.

The model will offer both single-motor and dual-motor versions, with the former boasting a front motor with a peak power of 235 kW. The dual-motor version flaunts an additional rear motor with a peak power of 135 kW, for a total output of 370 kW - that’s 496 hp in the old speak.

Crucially, the entry-level X9 comes with a lower-cost lithium iron phosphate battery, featuring an 84.5 kWh capacity and a CLTC range of 379 miles. For those seeking more, the long-range version, equipped with a Li-ion ternary battery pack, boasts a 101.5 kWh capacity and extends the CLTC range to 436 miles for the single-motor model and 398 miles for the dual-motor variant.

The XPeng X9 boasts a turning diameter of 10.8 meters, the smallest in its class, thanks to its rear-wheel steering feature. Add to it the signature smart driving capabilities and 800 V architecture enabling some proper fast charging, and XPeng hopes to have a winner on its hands.

Beyond the specifications, XPeng adopted innovative manufacturing techniques, utilizing large integrated die-casting machines at its Guangzhou plant. The result is a body with three times the torsional stiffness of conventional structures, up to 46,000 Nm/deg, with weight reduced by 19% compared to standard designs.

As XPeng gets ready for the X9 launch, it faces competition from Li Auto Mega MPV, unveiled on the same day at the Guangzhou auto show. While Li Auto is yet to reveal the Mega's price, hints suggest it will exceed RMB 500,000, making the X9 an attractive alternative for budget-conscious EV enthusiasts.

Nio, another major player in the EV arena, has an MPV model in the works, but according to founder William Li, the launch is not imminent. Let’s not forget about Zeekr 009 and its Volvo twin - the EM90. The electric MOV market in China is getting very crowded very quickly. Does the X9 have what it takes to make a stand?
