Yangwang U9 ready for deliveries after six-month Nurburgring testing
BYD's luxury electric vehicle brand, Yangwang, is ready to take the first step into the world of supercars. Its highly anticipated U9 has completed six months of rigorous testing at the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife, often called the "Green Hell" for its challenging layout and unforgiving terrain.
The U9 underwent extensive fine-tuning at the Nurburgring, with the Yangwang team optimizing its performance across the track's 70+ corners and enhancing its capabilities across more than 30 critical track sections. Nearly 150 technical aspects of the vehicle were meticulously tested, ensuring the U9 could confidently tackle this demanding circuit.
Following the testing and setup, the first batch of U9 supercars rolled off the production line last week. The purpose-built facility was created to meet the extraordinary production standards required for this high-performance EV. It has an advanced body assembly and final assembly areas.
It also includes a unique cleanroom for producing the U9's carbon fiber monocoque, meeting medical-grade humidity and temperature control standards to ensure precision in the manufacturing of the U9's intricate carbon fiber chassis and components.
BYD says that to ensure the U9 meets the highest quality standards, its production adheres to stringent aerospace engineering protocols, with meticulous inspections conducted at every stage. As production ramps up, Yangwang is gearing up to deliver these exquisitely crafted supercars to its first customers later this month.
The U9's impressive performance capabilities are further amplified by the Yunan-X system, working in tandem with the e4 platform to deliver unparalleled stability and responsiveness in all directions. Leveraging an 800V high-voltage platform and a 36kW high-power suspension motor, the Yunan-X system can provide over 1 ton of lift force per wheel and exhibits exceptionally precise responsiveness.
Priced at RMB 1.68 million (approximately $232,000), the YangWang U9 rockets from 0 to 62 mph in 2.36 seconds. Measuring 195.5 inches in length, 79.9 inches in width, and 51 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 114.2 inches, this 5,456 lb supercar is hardly a lightweight. A carbon fiber roof and rear diffuser won't make a dent in that weight but add to the aggressive looks, and the optional racing spoiler turns the looks dial to 11.
The U9 harnesses the power of BYD's e4 powertrain, comprising four motors that generate a peak torque of 1,239 lb-ft and propel the car to a top speed of over 192 mph. The U9 completes a 0-15,748 inches sprint in an astonishing 9.78 seconds and is equipped with an 80 kWh battery offering a CLTC range of 280 miles. Charging is a breeze with dual fast charging, which replenishes the battery from 30-80% in just 10 minutes. Charging at home takes approximately 7 hours.
