2024 Volvo EX90 debuts in the US, LiDAR is standard

Volvo chose to unveil the EX90 at CES, a technology trade show, rather than an auto show because the company believes the vehicle will be "a highly advanced computer on wheels," as stated in a press release.

The company is now taking pre-orders for the electric SUV, which can seat up to seven people and as important difference from the European version LiDAR is part of the standard equipment rather than an option.

The 2024 EX90 is also equipped with five radars, eight cameras, and sixteen ultrasonic sensors, which help the car to take action if the sensors detect that the driver is not paying sufficient attention to the road. Volvo claims that the LiDAR system, which is made by Luminar has the ability to detect small objects "roughly two football fields ahead in day or night, and even at highway speed."

The US Volvo EX90 comes with the same synchronous permanent magnet motors and 111kWh battery pack with a usable capacity of 107kWh as the Polestar 3. According to what we learned at the global reveal in Europe, the EX90 has an estimated range of 372 miles (600 kilometers) on a single charge.

The company has not yet disclosed the range rated by the EPA. For reference, the Polestar 3 has a range of about 300 miles.

The Volvo EX90 is able to charge at a maximum of 250 kW, which allows it to go from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes. However, the vehicle uses a 400-volt architecture which requires 600 amps, and not all fast chargers are capable of delivering that even if they support higher output. If the charger can only deliver 300 amps at 400 volts, you will be limited to 120kW speeds.

The EX90's electric motors generate a total output of 380kW (510horsepower) and 617 pound-feet (910Nm) of torque, which is the same as the Polestar 3 with the Performance Pack.

While Volvo has not disclosed the acceleration of the EX90 in the US, but in its European specification it deals with 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and the 0 to 60 mph takes just 4.7 seconds. The top speed is limited to 180 km/h or 112mph as it is the case with all recent Volvo models.

Maybe in an alternative universe, but let's be honest Volvo has much bigger issues when it comes to EV ... and it is not design, it is an abysmal powertrain.
