Jeep just unveiled its first foray into the full-size electric SUV market with the Wagoneer S. It will be joining the the Jeep Avenger urban crossover in the expanding EV lineup of the iconic US brand.

The Wagoneer S boasts an impressive dual-motor powertrain generating 600 horsepower and 617 lb-ft of torque, propelling the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.4 seconds. That's even quicker than the Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. A 100.5 kWh battery pack is estimated to provide over 300 miles of range.

Jeep was quick to point out it beats the Tesla Model Y Performance by 0.1 seconds in the sprint and by 20 kWh when it comes to battery capacity. We'll have to wait for the real life range tests, though, before we know what kind of difference that makes. The Wagoneer S can charge from 20% to 80% in 23 minutes on a DC fast charger.

While maintaining the signature Jeep seven-slot grille, the Wagoneer S departs from the traditional boxy design, embracing a sleeker and more aerodynamic profile. With a drag coefficient of Cd 0.29 it's not going to break any records, but it's a step in the right direction. The interior features a quartet of screens - gauge cluster, infotainment display, climate control display, and a dedicated passenger display.

The Launch Edition model has a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system and leather seats, giving a luxurious vibe.

The Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition, with its premium features and powerful performance, starts at $71,995. That's nearly $20,000 more than Model Y Performance, but this price point aligns with the luxury SUV segment that the Wagoneer S aims to compete in. The EV is expected to be available at dealerships in the US and Canada starting in the fall of 2024.

The Jeep Wagoneer S is a significant step for the automaker as it expands its presence in the electric vehicle market. With its impressive performance, range, and luxurious features, it aims to sit in a class above the Model Y, which is a very different approach to the one the Avenger took. We'll try to get behind the wheel as quickly as possible and see if it delivers on its lofty promises.

This actually looks kind of cool. I like that sleek design the Wagon has with the aerodynamic profile. It's a fresh look for Jeep.
