Android Automotive 15 will bring an app dock, Bluetooth headphones support and more

Peter, 16 September 2024

While Google is putting the finishing touches on Android 15 for phones, the company is also working on new features for Android Automotive. This shouldn’t be confused with the similarly named Android Auto – Automotive is Android that runs on the car’s infotainment computer, not your phone. So, what’s new with Android Automotive 15? Like we said, Google is still working on it, so this list might be incomplete, but here is what we have so far.

For starters, your favorite apps will be easier to access, since you will be able to pin them on the new Dock. Additionally, carmakers will have a chance to add some extra brand flavor by customizing the Ambient View – this will be visible when the infotainment displays are on, but not actively in use.

Android Automotive 15 is also improving support for the HD Radio and DAB broadcast standards. These were already partially supported, but with v15 all broadcast features should be available.

Version 15 will bring support for Bluetooth and USB headphones. For example, you can play something for the kids on their headphones instead of the speakers, so that you can enjoy a quiet drive. However, there is a downside to this. The current Bluetooth stack can only handle one connection, so when Bluetooth headphones are connected, you won’t be able to stream audio from your phone to the car over Bluetooth.

This version also adds a “Wi-Fi hotspot persistence” toggle, which will enable the car’s hotspot for every drive, instead of having to toggle it manually.

The previous version, v14, came out in mid-October 2023, so it should be a month or so before v15 is final. There might be a few more new features included before the deadline arrives.

Should I move in to iOS to get working solution? Or should I replace my car? Is Jaguar accepted?

The very last thing I want is for my car to get updates like phones nowadays do. I'll definitely do everything I can to keep my current car running for years and hopefully decades to come.
