Apex AP-0 revealed as Attucks by Wyclef Jean

It's been nearly 3 years to the day since Apex AP-0 was introduced. Back in March 2020 Apex revealed the AP-0 as a road legal race-inspired electric sports car. It was supposed to go into production in 2022 and offer Level 3 autonomous driving with an upgrade to Level 4 to come later. 2022 came and went and Apex went silent. Lo and behold the one and only Wyclef Jean took to Instagram earlier today to unveil his new automotive company with its first product - an electric supercar called the Attucks Apex AP-0. Yes, it is the same Apex AP-0 we saw three years ago but now it comes with fluorescent yellow wheel and hood accents.

There are no visual changes at all nor the technical specification was changed. It still is a 650hp electric rocket. The same 90kWh battery powers the 580Nm (428 lb-ft) electric motor, which propels the car from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in just 2.3 seconds. It is worth noting that when first unveiled in 2020, that time was quoted for 0 to 100km/h sprint.

The beauty of the Apex AP-0 was always its weight, or rather lack of it. Electric cars these days are synonymous with weight and only recently we saw what weight can do to a performance oriented Smart #1 Brabus. The Apex AP-0 weighs only 1,200kg since it is pretty much entirely made out of carbon fiber.

Why the name Attucks? Well, Wyclef Jean named his company, and its first car, after Crispus Attucks. Crispus was a Black man who was killed by the British troops at the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. It marked the start of the American Revolutionary War. The name choice is quite interesting when you consider the Apex AP-0 is a British car.

Attucks, the automotive company of Wyclef Jean, is based in Little Haiti in Miami and according to Jean himself, the company is meant to be a “platform responsible for discovering and developing technology, inventions, technological solutions, sustainability, creativity and design, coding and web3”. That’s a lot for a company that wants to sell electric sports cars.

Then there is the price. When first announced back in 2020, the Apex AP-0 came with a $185,000 price tag. That price has been now adjusted, the inflation clearly has been taken into account together with the value of the new brand and the Attucks Apex AP-0 will retail at $350,000. Apparently it is a bargain when compared to Pininfarina Battista or Rimac Nevera. Who would want to compare the AP-0 to any of those cars? Wyclef Jean for one.
