Chery's new concept EV has the lowest drag coefficient ever

Ro, 03 November 2023

The Chinese carmaker Chery has introduced a bold new EV concept with the lowest drag coefficient in the automotive world. The achieved Cd value is 0.168 with the design being inspired by the tuna fish.

And for something inspired by the unsightly water dweller the concept looks pretty cool. It adopts a bionic-style design language with plenty of LEDs, including some on the rims. To achieve the impressive aerodynamic efficiency, Chery used AI-powered simulation with more than 2,000 optimization cases before it came to the final design.

With the increased popularity of EVs aerodynamic efficiency is becoming increasingly important and for a very good reason. The drag resistance has a huge impact on consumption particularly at extra-urban and highway speeds, so it affects range significantly. And range anxiety is still one of the major hurdles preventing a lot of people from switching to electric propulsion.

Chery's new concept may not be something we will see on the street, but some of the ideas will certainly be employed in its future designs, edging us another step closer to that ICE-matching range per charge.
