First sighting of MG Cyberster

Max McDee, 14 February 2023

MG Cyberster has the potential to turn into one of the exciting electric cars to drive and, judging by the photos you are about to see, the debut is near. This 2-seat electric convertible has been spotted without any camouflage and we even got a glimpse of the interior.

Since the design images of the MG Cyberster went public thanks to a patent filing, the car itself is no longer a surprise. But seeing it actually in the flesh, without any disguise and in production-ready state is enough to brighten up the cloudiest day.

First sighting of MG Cyberster

While the prototype MG Cyberster was as wild as they get, the production model toned down the wild bits but still kept the layout that used to make MG cars of old days fun to drive. So we have 2 seats only, mid-engine resembling design, folding roof and enough power to turn a commuting trip into a fun adventure.

MG hasn’t unveiled any details of the powertrains yet but promised the entry level model will be RWD and the AWD version will follow at some point later in time. Even the entry level MG4 enjoys 170hp power output which translates to a 7.7 s sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. The same powertrain in the MG Cyberster - smaller and lighter - could only mean better numbers.

First sighting of MG Cyberster

MG as a brand has a faithful following, despite the company diverging quite a bit from its roots after the ownership went to SAIC. The company is keen on reinventing the MG brand and quick electric convertible is one sure way to do it.

If the AWD version of Cyberster was to share the powertrain with the MG4 Triumph Edition, we would have a serious supercar on our hands. Seriously - what is the definition of supercar? 2-door and 2-seat convertible? Check. Scissor doors? Check. Yoke steering? Check. 0-100 km/h in less than 4 seconds? Check. A brand famous for performance cars? Almost check.

First sighting of MG Cyberster

The 449 hp electric MG Cyberster would literally obliterate many competitors. Add to it affordability and MG has the potential to upset a lot of people who spent in excess of €80,000 to get anywhere near the performance that this sub-€50,000 fast convertible can offer.

The world is changing really fast. The electrification of the cars has brought its own problems, the cars are prohibitively expensive in most cases, charging infrastructure - or rather lack of it - is choking the progress. But from time to time manufacturers come up with a nugget like the MG Cyberster - unashamedly fun to drive, with a potential to be seriously fast and without a bank breaking price tag. Saving the planet is almost a side effect in case of the Cyberster.
